R. Baker and Son All Industrial Services, an expert rigging, demolition, machinery moving and equipment relocation contractor, recently completed the relocation of the USS Intrepid’s propeller at the USS Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York.
Under a previous contract, R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services (R. Baker & Son) had previously staged the propeller while a steel display frame was being fabricated. The propeller is solid brass, weighs 28,000 lbs and is 15 feet 6 inches from blade tip to blade tip.
This next phase of the project required R. Baker & Son to lift the propeller from a horizontal position into a vertical position and mount the propeller onto the frame. The frame then needed to be relocated to another part of the carrier for permanent display.
To accomplish this task, a 5 man expert rigging crew was mobilized to the site. In addition, a 5,000 lb Hyster forklift, two (2) scissor lifts, chain blocks and other various rigging equipment were delivered to the site.
Utilized the various rigging equipment, the R. Baker & Son rigging crew lifted the 29,000 lb propeller from a horizontal position into a vertical position. Because the propeller was located in the bay of the carrier, there was very little headroom and the crews only had only about 6 inches of clearance once the propeller was stood straight up.
Once in a vertical position, the propeller was held in place via chain blocks while a 3,800 pound shaft was inserted. Once the shaft was in place, the assembly was then carefully landed onto the steel display frame.
The entire frame and propeller assembly then needed to be moved approximately 150 feet to its final location. In order to accomplish this, the epoxy floor first had to be protected with hardboard. Following protection of the floor, R. Baker & Son’s expert rigging crews utilized several 15 ton Teflon skates along with the 5,000 lb forklift to carefully move the assembly to its final location.
The project was completed within the 1 day timeframe set by the client. The project was incident and accident free. For more information on R. Baker & Son’s capabilities and projects completed, visit www.rbaker.com

R. Baker & Son Completes Critical Installation of Generator for Private Client
R. Baker and Son All Industrial Services, an expert rigging, machinery moving and equipment relocation contractor recently completed the rigging and rough setting of a 4,000 lb backup generator for a private client in New Jersey.
R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services (R. Baker & Son) was contracted by a private client to offload, rig and set a 4,000 lb generator onto a concrete pad. The client contracted R. Baker & Son to perform the work due to their impeccable safety record (EMR 0.79), professionalism and cost effectiveness.
Prior to the commencement of work, R. Baker & Son conducted several evaluations and the development of a critical lift plan. An evaluation of the area where the crane and equipment would be placed was conducted to ascertain ground stability and the potential for underground utilities. The weight of the generator was also considered to determine proper selection of necessary slings and associated rigging equipment. Based on the weight of the generator and the calculation of height and radius from center pin of crane to desired placement of generator, R. Baker & Son determined that the appropriate sized crane needed to be a 50 ton hydraulic crane
The work began by coordinating the delivery of the generator to the site with the mobilization of the crane and rigging crew. The project needed to be completed in one day so timing was crucial.
R. Baker & Son mobilized a three (3) man expert rigging crew along with a 50 ton hydraulic crane to the site. In addition, ancillary rigging equipment (shackles, nylon straps, etc.) and safety equipment (fire extinguishers, safety kit, etc.) were also delivered to the site.
The flat bed truck delivering the generator and the rigging crew along with crane were expertly coordinated to the site and all arrived on time in the morning. The generator was then carefully lifted from the flatbed and then carefully placed onto the concrete pad. The generator was rough set.
The project was completed within the 1 day timeframe set by the client. The project was incident and accident free. For more information on R. Baker & Son’s capabilities and projects completed, please visit www.rbaker.com

R. Baker & Son Completes Selective Demolition of LNG Vaporizers
R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services (R. Baker & Son) recently completed the demolition of three (3) Liquid Nitrogen Gas (LNG) vaporizers including piping, conduits and selected foundations at an active LNG facility in New Jersey. The large energy services client contracted R. Baker & Son due to their exemplary safety record, expert selective demolition services and competitive rates.
The vaporizers were shutdown in early 2008. The piping was previously purged by the client with nitrogen and made safe. The vaporizers were also confirmed to be asbestos free.
Prior to any demolition and dismantlement activities, R. Baker & Son worked with the client representatives to make necessary disconnects and weld caps, reroute piping, and isolate mechanical systems from the existing vaporizers. This included hydrostatic pressure testing of the newly installed vales and piping as well as certification of the welding (100% radio graphed). In addition, all necessary Local and State permits were obtained to perform the work.
Due to the proximity to active operations, strict safety measures were implemented. These safety procedures included:
• A Contractor Safety Orientation was completed with each worker before any work began.
• Daily “Tail Board” safety talks were given to the workers covering work topics such as MSDS sheets, hand tools, weld flash, burning, fire extinguisher use, ladders, etc
• No smoking policy on entire facility
• U.L. approved fire extinguishers and fire hoses with nozzles to protect work area and equipment.
• Temporary fencing, barricades, safety lights, traffic control, etc. were utilized to secure work area.• All roadways remained open at all times for emergency equipment access.
• All fire hydrants remained operable and accessible during the entire demolition process.• Area combustion testing was performed at the start of the work day and at mid day
• Since the LNG plant is an active operating plant, no equipment, pipes beams, etc. could be dropped which would cause vibrations to the surrounding operating equipment. All materials needed to be carefully lowered to the ground using cranes or heavy equipment.
Once the vaporizers were isolated, R. Baker & Son began the demolition of these items. The typical procedure for the demolition of each vaporizer was to first torch cut the legs of the vaporizer. A 75,000 lb excavator with shear was utilized with rigging gear to carefully lower each vaporizer in a controlled manner to the ground. Once on its side, it would be moved to the nearby staging area to be cut into scrap metal using the excavator with shear attachment.
Once the demolition of the vaporizers and associated piping and conduits was completed, R. Baker & Son proceed with the concrete work. The main concrete foundation needed to be prepared for grading. The foundation was to remain but all surface protrusions such as anchor bolts and grout needed to be removed to create a flat smooth surface. In addition, pipe support footings were removed to one foot below grade. Voids created by concrete footing removal were filled with ¾ size clean stone. Final grade was accomplished by covering the area with 4 inches of ¾ inch clean stone matching existing area stone.
The work was completed in less than a month weeks without incident or injury.

Spotlight on R. Baker & Son - A Veteran Owned and Operated Contracting Company
R. Baker & Son: Veteran Founded Company
Walter Baker is an accomplished man. As co-founder of R. Baker & Son, he’s been at the helm of the company for 55 years. He recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. He is also a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. R. Baker & Son’s recent work at the USS Intrepid Museum called to mind some fond memories.
Walter joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1954. In 1961, a crisis arose when the border between East and West Berlin was closed, and Walter was called to active duty aboard the USS Remey. A Fletcher-class destroyer, Remey was armed with an arsenal of 5-inch guns, depth charges, torpedos, hedgehogs, and K guns.
As a boiler operator in the engineering group, Walter serviced Remey’s 800-lb boilers. While Fletcher-class destroyers are officially credited with a top speed of 36 knots, Remey could occasionally achieve 45 knots by “lighting off” the boilers’ super-heated steam.
Remey’s boilers served a more practical purpose for Walter and his crewmates, as well. Walter remembers cooking hams in the mudrums when inclement weather prevented the kitchens from being used. During one particularly fierce storm, Remey was battered by massive 45-foot waves. “We were iron men in an iron ship”, recalls Walter with a chuckle. “Sometimes, she seemed more like a submarine than a destroyer.”
In 1963, USS Remey was decommissioned, and she was berthed in Philadelphia. In 1976, she was sold and broken up for scrap. Walter would occasionally see her when R. Baker & Son worked in the Philly area, and she never failed to evoke proud memories of his service aboard her.
