R. Baker and Son All Industrial Services Celebrates 73rd Year in Business

R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services, an expert dismantlement, demolition, plant relocation and decommissioning contractor, recently celebrated their 73rd year in business.

In 1932 the company founder, Robert Baker, started the company with a Brockway truck and worked out of the old prospect terminal in Brooklyn, New York. Robert’s clientele was an eclectic collection of powerhouses, well drillers, water companies and other facilities in the New York City and Long Island areas. Robert bought and sold all types of machinery, generators, compressors, scrap metal and the like.

In 1954, Walter Baker joined his father’s company and the two continued to grow the company. They bought their first yard in Staten Island at the foot of Richmond Terrace.

In 1961, a crisis arose when the border between East and West Berlin was closed, and Walter was called to active duty aboard the USS Remey. Robert continued to run the company while his son helped protect the nation.

They sold the yard on Richmond Terrace and bought another 5 acre facility under the Goethals Bridge, which is still the current yard and warehouse location.

In 1974, Robert passed away and Walter took the lead role in the company.

Over the years, Walter’s sons, David and Mark and Spencer, joined the firm and the company expanded into performing larger and more complicated dismantlement, rigging, decommissioning and demolition projects with Fortune 100 and 500 clients.

The company is now headquartered in Red Bank, NJ, with over 100 employees and numerous pieces of heavy equipment. The company has seen record revenues over the last couple years with revenue over 13 Million Dollars last year.

R. Baker and Son Completes Power Plant Dismantlement and Demolition Project in New York

R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services, a premier demolition, decommissioning and dismantlement contractor, completed a very technical dismantlement project at power station for a large international electric and gas company in New York.

The basic scope was to demolish, remove and dispose of two (2) – 100 foot tall ash silos including one elevated existing access bridge and other associated structures.

Prior to commencing demolition and dismantlement activities, numerous pre-dismantlement tasks had to be completed to ensure work would proceed safely and in accordance with OSHA regulations. R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services, Inc. (R. Baker & Son) confirmed all utilities to the structures to be demolished had been disconnected. An OSHA engineering survey was performed, the proper permits were obtained and notifications were sent out promptly. In addition, there were several gas lines that could not be relocated which necessitated the construction of scaffolding around the gas line with debris netting to protect from damage.

R. Baker & Son mobilized an expert dismantlement crew to the site to perform this skilled work. The dismantlement crew consisted of a project manager/health and safety coordinator, and approximately a five person dismantling crew. The crew utilized several pieces of equipment which included two (2) 100 foot man-lifts, one skid steer loader, one 10,000 lb telescopic lull, a 50 ton hydraulic crane and miscellaneous rigging and dismantlement gear.

The first task for R. Baker & Son was to remove all asbestos containing materials (ACM) from the elevated access bridge, associated piping and the ash silo roofs. Abatement crews in man-lifts were utilized to accomplish the proper abatement of the asbestos. All ACM was properly handled and disposed of offsite.

Following the asbestos abatement, the elevated access bridge and piping were carefully dismantled and rigged down by workers in man-lifts with the assistance from a 50 ton crane. R. Baker & Son followed strict hot work procedures which included obtaining a daily work permit as well as opening all piping and lines at a minimum of two (2) points, then tested gas free prior to any shear or torch work.

Once the area around the silos was cleared, workers utilizing man-lifts started from the top of the silo to break the brick walls of the silos into themselves. The task of dismantling the silos was made very difficult as the silos went up through the roof a building that was to be maintained and could not be damaged. The standard operating procedure for the dismantlement of each silo was for workers to carefully demolish the walls in such a manner as to allow the bricks to fall into the silo. Dismantlement crews used extreme caution so that bricks would not fall onto the roof below. A large opening in the base of the silo was utilized to remove the demolished brick. This process continued until the silos had been completely dismantled down to the inside of the building.

Once the silo had been dismantled down to inside the building the remaining portion was then carefully demolished along with all other associated piping, equipment and hoppers. The building was basically gutted from ceiling to wall.

The final task was the restoration of the building roof. Utilizing in-house crews, R. Baker & Son performed the restoration of the building roof.

The project was completed in 5 months without incident or injury. In addition, the client was extremely pleased with R. Baker & Sons ability to perform a complete turn-key project from dismantlement to restoration and maintain budget and schedule.

R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services Completes Dismantlement and Decommissioning of Steel Stacks

R. Baker and Son All Industrial Services performed the decommissioning and dismantling of four (4) gunite lined steel stacks from the top of PSEG’s Glenmont, New York Powerhouse. The 20 ft diameter, 170 ft tall stacks sat on top of the 165 ft high building roof for a total height from the ground of 335 feet.

Tasks involved cleaning and remediation of over 1000 cy of fly ash from the stack bases and breeching. Material management was critical including segregation of fly ash, gunite and carbon steel for recycling.

Rigging and dismantling procedures involved detailed lift plans, weight calculations, monitoring weather conditions and wind loads, confirming ground stability and a number of other critical factors to guarantee that all lifts were safely performed.

One of the largest obstacles was the type of crane to be utilized due to a confined footprint for which to assemble equipment and which was surrounded by live power lines, cooling towers and new powerhouse which remained on line 24/7. R. Baker and Son All Industrial Services decided to utilize a M760 ton Favco tower crane erected on top of the powerhouse which was used to facilitate the lifting and lowering to ground of stack sections. R. Baker & Son erected and installed a base for the Favco tower crane and tied it directly into the building's column lines.

A 500 ton hydraulic Demag was also utilized to hoist workers in a certified man basket over 350' in the air in order to perform rigging and dismantling activities.

R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services completed the strictly-controlled and potentially hazardous project on-schedule, within regulations, and, most importantly, incident free.

Historic Look Back at Large Rigging and Equipment Moving Project for R. Baker and Son

The following story is an historical look back at one of R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services larger rigging accomplishments. For more details and photographs go to http://www.rbaker.com/rigging.php

During the early hours on a clear September Saturday morning with the majestic downtown Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, a new chapter unfolded on the flourishing Jersey City waterfront. The landmark Colgate clock, which was originally mounted on an eight-story manufacturing building built in 1924. Standing seventy feet high and fifty-four feet wide is the world’s largest working vertical face clock as noted in the Guinness Book of World Records. The clock was moved to its new location where it will continue to provide the Metropolitan area and Hudson River travelers with the time of day and an unforgettable site for years to come.

The Colgate-Palmolive Company, in taking great care to preserve the historic harbor landmark and keep it running during the harbor front redevelopment of the firm’s 34-acre site mandated that the giant clock and adjacent 90 by 60-foot billboard be relocated and up and running within a 48 hour period to minimize the length of time the clock would out of service.

To accomplish this monumental feat, the operation's logistics and rigging were entrusted to R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services of Staten Island, New York. To protect the clock’s complicated and sensitive mechanisms and meet the overall project goals, R. Baker & Son decided to move both the sign and clock and its 70-foot high steel frame in one piece rather than dismantle and reassemble them.

R. Baker & Son went to great lengths during the planning stages to assure that all concerns and aspects of this complicated project were addressed. A structural survey was performed and an engineered rigging and lifting plan was developed. Plate bearing capacity tests over the course, which the crane was to travel, were performed. Wind speed was charted for a period of two weeks prior to lift. Precise calculations were developed in order to determine static load strength to determine the exact pick points to accomplish a perfectly level lift in order to walk the two structures to their new location.

R. Baker & Son utilized numerous specially manufactured spreader bars and rigging systems in order to lift and walk these massive structures, utilizing a 250-ton conventional crane along with a 150-ton hydraulic assist crane. To perform this delicate transfer R. Baker & Son coordinated the services of dozens of highly qualified personnel made up of iron workers, engineers, electricians, operators and local law enforcement officers.

Upon final setting and field certification of welds and anchoring systems a post inspection analysis was performed to verify that all aspects of the project were performed to the highest standards of quality. With work beginning at 6:00 am on Saturday morning and completed by 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening R. Baker & Son successfully completed the goal set before them to have the billboard and clock up and running for the hundreds of thousands of metropolitan area commuters to set their watches by on Monday morning.
